Islington Talking News
Islington Talking News is an audio magazine for the 1700 blind and visually impaired residents of the borough. Yetunde Oyediran, a former nurse originally from Nigeria campaigned for several years to establish Islington Talking News to improve access to information and help reduce feelings of isolation.
With a small grant and the auspicious nickname ‘ITN’, Islington Talking News finally started to take shape this March. Tragically, Yetunde died just 2 weeks before this first magazine was finished.
ITN is a creative magazine programme of the previous month’s local news together with original material sourced by volunteers, many of whom are aspiring journalists. Newsreader, Ken Okona-Mensah, remarked: “I was particularly happy with the relaxed approach which made the project fun and non-intimidating ... taking part has further cemented my desire to pursue journalism/radio and only today I was offered a place at a leading journalism training college.” Jenn Mattinson said: “It really made me feel like I had important skills to contribute. It has also confirmed my passion for audio and my love of interacting with people.”
The final result is a 60 minute programme of features, reviews, news, competitions and what’s on information, and what you can hear here is a short montage which reflects the variety of the content.

Elaine Dunbar

I initially joined CSV, in order to update my skills after working four years within the television industry, as a Celebrity booker. I found my experience on the course thought provoking, beneficial and extremely helpful in understanding the radio and print industry.
During my time at Islington, knife attacks had increased that resulted in a number of deaths, so I decided to base my programme around this topic, so as to produce a thought-provoking radio show.
At present, I am freelancing for Radio 1 as an Assistant Producer and Unit Assistant on a number of their mainstream programmes. If you would like to contact me regarding work, or the piece featured on CSV showcase, please do not hesitate to
